Alertacall, a company dedicated to ensuring the safety of older adults in social housing across the UK, has celebrated its 20th anniversary by planting 20,000 trees in the Lake District.

Founded in 2004 by CEO James Batchelor, Alertacall was created to address the needs of his own independent relatives. Today, the company serves tens of thousands of individuals across the UK. Its services include a touch screen that facilitates better two-way communication between housing providers and older adults, as well as a service called OKEachDay, which provides daily contact through a specially trained team. Alertacall also assists higher-needs groups and families.

The company has around 100 employees working from offices in Windermere, Kendal, and Warrington.

To mark its 20th anniversary, Alertacall partnered with Buy Land Plant Trees CIC, which has been planting trees in the Lake District National Park since 2020. The company aims to plant a total of 100,000 trees over the next few years, ensuring that each tree represents one of its customers.

James met Sally Phillips, the founder of Buy Land Plant Trees, at a Buckingham Palace reception for winners of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in 2022. James received the award for Alertacall, while Sally was recognized for her business, Chimney Sheep.

“We started talking, and I was immediately inspired by Sally’s goal of planting hundreds of thousands of trees to benefit the environment for generations,” said James.

“Alertacall has long-term ambitions to grow and serve more customers across the UK. We want to help both people and the environment as we expand. Donating trees is a wonderful way to celebrate our anniversary, and I look forward to planting many more in the future.”

Sally added, “Many animals, insects, and plants depend on trees. Our goal is to restore the woodlands that once thrived in the national park and future-proof the landscape so that it remains for centuries.

“It’s not just about the beauty of trees; it also involves addressing climate change, carbon sequestration, flood mitigation, and providing long-term protection. Planting 100,000 trees is an ambitious target, and we look forward to collaborating with Alertacall to create forests of the future.”
