Best Practices for Watering Garden Plants in Summer.
Watering plants regularly during summer is essential to keep them hydrated, but timing and technique are crucial.
Experts from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) suggest watering garden plants in the morning rather than the evening. According to the RHS, “Watering in the morning is ideal because plants begin to use water as the sun rises. Additionally, the foliage and soil surface remain drier for longer, which helps prevent issues with slugs, snails, and mildew diseases.”
During the day, plants absorb water through their roots, transport it up their stems, and release it through small pores on their leaves known as stomata. Morning watering aligns with this natural process.
If morning watering is not feasible, evening watering can be an option, although it might attract slugs.
Avoid watering during the hottest part of the day, as much of the water will evaporate from the soil’s surface.
