3 Simple Household Ingredients to Heal Damaged Plants in Summer

Plants Can Suffer from Sunburn Just Like Humans.

Household plants can experience sunburn, though not in the same way humans do. Instead of turning red or purple, affected plants may shift from a vibrant green to yellow, white, or brown. If left untreated, this can lead to the plant’s death.

Fortunately, gardening expert Elise Harlock has shared a simple and inexpensive remedy that could save your plants. According to Harlock, plain, unsweetened yogurt—a common household item—can be an effective treatment.

Elise Harlock, a brand manager at Prestige Flowers, explains that yogurt contains probiotics, which help maintain healthy microbial activity crucial for nutrient absorption and overall plant health. “Yogurt creates a protective layer on the plant’s surface, shielding it from additional UV damage while enhancing its natural defenses,” she said. “It acts like a soothing balm that not only protects but also supports recovery.”

Harlock recommends using Greek yogurt for this purpose due to its thicker consistency and higher levels of beneficial bacteria. “This type of yogurt is easier to apply and more effective in its healing properties,” she added.

For application, Harlock advises mixing one part yogurt with three parts water. Use one tablespoon of yogurt for every three tablespoons of water. Stir the mixture until fully dissolved and transfer it to a clean spray bottle. Apply the solution during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to avoid further stress on the plant.
