Jokadou Chainsaw Owners Association Launches Tree Planting Initiative.

Jokadou, North Bank Region — On Sunday, the Chainsaw Owners Association of Jokadou began its first-ever tree planting initiative by planting 200 seedlings in Jokadou, North Bank Region. This move marks the association’s shift from logging to promoting sustainable livelihoods.

The initiative was spearheaded by Jokadou Chief Alpha Omar Khan, who aimed to strengthen ties between the district tribunal and local communities to foster social cohesion.

Chief Khan praised the restoration effort as a historic milestone, highlighting the association’s dedication to environmental protection and restoration. He stressed that tree felling alone does not support sustainable development and noted that the formation of the association would help address legal conflicts between forestry officials and chainsaw operators.

Omar Dumbiya of Memmeh, President of the Chainsaw Owners Association, expressed gratitude to Chief Khan for his support in establishing the association. Dumbiya revealed that members had purchased 208 bags of fertilizer, with each member receiving eight bags to boost food production and productivity. He also highlighted the significance of planting the 200 tree seedlings.

Dumbiya appealed to NGOs and institutions for support in capacity building and resource mobilization, aiming to help members explore other sustainable livelihood options.

Waggan Fam of Kerr Ngorr noted that the association has enhanced communication and understanding regarding environmental issues. He encouraged other chainsaw operators to join the initiative to ensure compliance and protect forest cover.

North Bank Region Governor Lamin Saidykhan praised the association’s efforts, calling them historic and a significant step toward forest restoration. He urged members to remain vigilant in protecting the environment and encouraged the public to support tree planting efforts to combat climate change.
