by Anna

A recent survey of 2,000 American adults has highlighted some of the most unusual gardening techniques used to keep gardens flourishing. Among these methods are utilizing white vinegar as a plant nutrient, repelling cats with cinnamon, and even singing to plants.

The survey also found that used teabags are commonly thrown onto garden soil. Other notable hacks include using baking soda to adjust soil alkalinity, sprinkling fireplace ash as a fertilizer, and watering plants with potato water.

According to the study, the average gardener dedicates approximately three hours each week to garden maintenance. Many draw inspiration from family, visits to garden centers, and even video games.

Sabrina Carmona, Vice President of Farm Heroes Saga at King, the mobile game developer behind the research, commented, “The research has unveiled some unique and creative gardening methods. It’s fascinating to see how gardening has become such a cherished hobby for many.”

Carmona likened gardening to art, comparing it to her work in game development. She added, “I’m always seeking new ideas and inspiration to enhance my creativity, much like the gardeners we studied.”

The study revealed that 67% of gardeners find satisfaction in seeing their efforts yield results. For 51%, gardening offers a peaceful escape, and 48% appreciate the nurturing aspect of the activity.

When it comes to specific tasks, 65% of gardeners enjoy watering plants, 36% find mowing the lawn rewarding, and 51% love harvesting their own produce. The top three vegetables grown are tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers, with 44% of gardeners aiming to save money through home cultivation.

Overall, American gardeners aim to enhance the visual appeal of their gardens (56%), improve mental well-being (55%), and acquire new skills (39%). Despite their enthusiasm, 67% wish they could spend more time gardening.

The study, conducted by OnePoll.com, also found that 92% of people believe it’s important to make time for enjoyable activities. Lack of time was identified as the main reason why 67% of people do not garden as much as they would like.

Additionally, 45% of respondents prefer visiting garden centers over nightclubs, and 66% believe gardening is an enjoyable activity for all ages, not just older individuals.

Carmona emphasized, “Gardening is a versatile and rewarding hobby that can be adapted to fit various lifestyles and abilities. It’s important to find moments of enjoyment in our busy lives, whether through physical gardening or virtual experiences like our puzzle game.”
