How to Grow More Hydrangeas with This Simple Method for Free Plants Forever

by Anna

Dave the Plant Man, a popular TikTok gardener with over 70,000 followers, has shared a straightforward method for growing new hydrangea plants. Known for their vibrant blooms and ease of care, hydrangeas are a favorite among garden enthusiasts.

In response to numerous requests about hydrangeas, Dave revealed his method for propagating these beautiful shrubs. “Everyone’s asking me about hydrangeas,” he noted in his recent video.

Hydrangeas are celebrated for their large, colorful flower clusters and low-maintenance requirements. They need regular watering and occasional pruning but are generally easier to care for compared to other ornamental plants.

Dave’s method involves cutting a segment of the hydrangea plant and placing it in water to develop new roots. Once the roots are established, the cutting can be planted in soil. This technique allows gardeners to produce an endless supply of hydrangeas without needing to buy new plants.

To start, Dave suggests selecting a tip of the hydrangea branch that does not have flowers. Cut the branch just below the leaf node using a sharp knife. He demonstrated this process by removing the leaves beneath the nodes on the stem.

If the leaves near the tip are large, Dave recommends trimming them to a manageable size. After cutting, place the segment in a glass of water. Dave showed how multiple cuttings can be put into the same container. He emphasized keeping the cuttings in a shady, humid, but warm environment to prevent drying out.

The best time to take cuttings is from summer to early autumn. Be aware that as autumn progresses, the plant’s stems mature and turn to ‘hardwood,’ which can slow down the rooting process.

Pruning is also important for maintaining healthy hydrangeas. Regularly remove wilted flower heads, known as deadheading, to help the plants focus their energy on producing strong roots and healthy foliage rather than seeds.
