How to Grow Plants While Reducing Disease Risks in NC

by Anna

In August, the strawberry-growing industry faced significant challenges due to a widespread outbreak of Neopestalotiopsis (Neo-P). This emerging fungal disease affects all parts of the strawberry plant, including the crown, roots, leaves, and fruit. As a result, thousands of growers across North America have had to cancel shipments and abandon their plans for the strawberry-growing season.

In response to these challenges, Nourse Farms, a leading berry plant propagator in North America, took proactive steps in 2023. The company invested in propagation techniques aimed at reducing risks like Neo-P while improving overall plant quality.

John Place, CEO of Nourse Farms, explained, “We start with our virus-indexed tissue culture mother plants. Over the past year, we have expanded our propagation systems to protect our plants from weather-related stress and minimize disease pressures. Our strict quality control processes ensure that our plants meet the highest standards of cleanliness and health.”

Nourse Farms operates a glasshouse in North Carolina primarily dedicated to producing strawberry tips.

Improving Plant Quality with Innovative Systems

Nourse Farms has introduced the GeGe rail tray system, protected by Haygrove tunnels at its facilities in Massachusetts and North Carolina. This innovative setup spans four acres in Massachusetts and 13 acres in North Carolina. It significantly enhances airflow around the plants, promotes better root development, and leads to stronger, more vigorous plants. By controlling the environment with rail trays and tunnels, Nourse Farms reduces soil contact and water splashing, thereby protecting the plants from disease and ensuring they arrive at customers’ fields ready for growth.

Maintaining Control from Lab to Field

Nourse Farms employs a unique process that allows it to oversee every step of plant production. This comprehensive approach enables the company to respond quickly to industry challenges, foster continuous innovation, and deliver high-quality plants that meet the changing needs of growers.

“With unpredictable weather patterns and new disease threats, we understood the importance of controlling our entire propagation process,” Place added.
