PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – This morning, residents experienced a light frost, but tomorrow’s conditions may be more severe, potentially covering the area with frost.
If your garden is still growing or you have outdoor plants, today is the time to protect them. The term “killer frost” reflects the serious impact such weather can have on gardens. Many plants are at risk tonight.
“Tomatoes, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, and similar plants should be a concern,” warned Rob Shenot of Shenot Farms.
For those with pumpkins, Shenot noted that while the vines may die, the pumpkins themselves should be fine. He emphasized the importance of taking protective measures today.
“Use old sheets or blankets you have at home; they work well,” Shenot suggested.
He explained that covering the plants is straightforward. “Just drape the cover over the top. You can use sticks to hold it up if you like, but it’s not necessary. Just throw it over, and it will protect them.”
Shenot cautioned against using plastic covers. “If any foliage touches the plastic when it freezes, it can harm your plants,” he said.
How long should you keep the plants covered? Shenot advised keeping them covered until the sun shines on them in the morning.
Additionally, those living farther from the city face a higher risk. “If you live in a low area or valley, cover your plants to be safe,” he advised.
If you have a few tomatoes that are starting to turn red, you can pick them; they will ripen off the vine.
With Halloween approaching, decorative pumpkins may also be at risk from overnight frost. If they get frosted, do not touch them, as this can create blemishes that lead to rot. Allow them to thaw naturally, or consider covering them overnight.
