Scientists Find Method to Create Genetically Identical Plants

Advances in Hybrid Plant Breeding.

Crossing different varieties of the same plant species often results in hybrid offspring that are stronger and grow faster than their parent plants. However, this enhanced growth typically diminishes in the following generation.

Recent advancements in plant breeding techniques allow for the preservation of these beneficial traits over time. Researchers can now create plants with four sets of chromosomes instead of the usual two. This innovation aims to produce high-yield and resilient crops, essential for feeding a growing global population, especially amid climate challenges.

Historically, the study of plant inheritance dates back to 1759, long before Gregor Johann Mendel, the Austrian monk, published his influential work on pea genetics. In that year, the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted a competition in St. Petersburg. The challenge was to demonstrate that plants possess sexual characteristics.
