Mayor Prohibits Cactus Plants in Buildings

A German town has implemented a ban on cacti in municipal buildings, including town halls, schools, and nurseries.

The decision by Plettenberg’s mayor, Ulrich Schulte, comes after a man required medical attention for an injury sustained from a cactus in a school. The council noted that what was an injury to an adult could have been much worse for a small child.

Due to privacy concerns, details about the injury were not disclosed. In a letter to local officials, Schulte stated, “All official and private cacti (Cactaceae) must be removed from municipal buildings immediately.” He emphasized that these plants could cause serious injuries.

The mayor added that the ban would extend to all municipal spaces, not just schools and nurseries. Despite some employees finding the order excessive or humorous, he insisted it was necessary to protect the health of staff and children.

A council spokesperson confirmed that the cactus ban has been successfully put into place.
