Volunteers Tackle Invasive Plants in White Township.
Today, a group of volunteers will gather at the White Township Recreation Complex to remove the invasive multiflora rose. The Plant Patrol will be on-site from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, focusing on the wooded area of the lower disc golf course. This location is situated between the parking area at the S&T Bank Arena and the George Lenz Soccer Fields and Playtime Park Playground. Community members are encouraged to join, and should wear long pants, protective footwear, and gloves. Bringing tools will also be helpful.
Additionally, volunteers can participate in another event this Thursday from 4:15 to 6:15 PM along the Laurel Run Trail at Yellow Creek State Park. They will hand-pull invasive periwinkle weed near the park office, benefiting from the current wet and muddy conditions.
On November 2nd, the group will continue their efforts at Pine Ridge Park in Burrell Township, where they will once again remove multiflora rose from 9:00 AM to noon.
In other news, White Township’s leaf collection starts tomorrow. This five-week program will run on Mondays until November 18th, except for Veterans Day, when collection will occur on Tuesday, November 12th. Crews will begin at 7 AM, collecting only biodegradable paper sacks weighing no more than 50 pounds. These sacks must be placed by the street or road at the edge of residents’ lawns. Crews will not enter driveways or yards, and will not collect plastic bags or un-bagged leaf piles.
