JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WLOX) — Keep Mississippi Beautiful is leading the charge toward a greener future by planting 250 trees across the state by 2026, in celebration of America’s 250th birthday.

On Tuesday, the organization planted a live oak at the Gulf Hills Hotel and Resort in Jackson County, marking the first of the 250 trees planned for the initiative. This project is part of the larger America250 effort.

“We aim to plant 250 trees by July 4, 2026. That’s a goal we’re excited about, and it reflects the core of what we do,” said Sarah Kountouris, Executive Director of Keep Mississippi Beautiful.

The initiative is being supported by 60 affiliate organizations across Mississippi, with a conference this week bringing together groups from communities ranging from Picayune to Pascagoula.

“Keeping our cities and state beautiful is crucial. It’s the only way we can leave a better world for future generations,” said Paige Riley of Keep Ocean Springs Beautiful.

During the event, Alex Ballard of the Mississippi Forestry Commission gave a presentation on the best practices for tree planting.

“Planting a tree isn’t difficult, but there are always ways to improve the process,” Ballard explained. “Digging a hole and putting the tree in the ground is simple, but there are key things that can help it thrive.”

As the live oak was planted, attendees discussed the steps they could take to ensure its health for years to come.

“These volunteers are key to the success of our efforts,” Ballard added. “When I visit cities, I look for groups like Keep Mississippi Beautiful. If they’re involved, I know we’re on the right path.”

Keep Mississippi Beautiful works alongside its affiliates on beautification projects, litter prevention, and educational campaigns on recycling and sustainability.

The organization’s tree planting initiative will continue across Mississippi through the coming year, as part of its broader mission to foster a greener and more sustainable state.
