Organizers of a new art installation featuring giant illuminated flowers hope to bring some holiday cheer to hospital patients this Christmas. The colorful displays, located at the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath, Somerset, will remain on display through the New Year.
The Victoria Amazonia flower sculptures were donated by the Frome-based artists’ studio Jigantics, who collaborated with the hospital’s Art at the Heart team. The artwork is placed in the Children’s Ward garden and two central courtyards next to the hospital’s atrium.
The installation features eight tall flower sculptures, which glow in shades of orange, red, and pink at night. The flowers, with their elongated petals pointing upwards, stand over a children’s play area.
Jigantics’ creations have previously been seen in public spaces across the West of England.
This new installation follows the success of a similar display during last year’s holiday season. James and Lindsey Cochrane, from Jigantics, said the sculptures aim to communicate a “shared unspoken language” between people.
“Research has shown that even looking at representations of nature can reduce stress and anxiety, improving mental health and wellbeing,” said James Cochrane. “We want these sculptures to shift the viewer’s perspective and enhance their experience of the space.”
He added that flowers have long been symbols of thought—whether love, empathy, celebration, or appreciation—and the illuminated blooms aim to evoke awe, relaxation, and a sense of unity.
“We hope to create a warm, joyful environment for those who view the sculptures,” Cochrane said. “Jigantics is grateful to all those working at the RUH and wishes all patients a happy Christmas.”
Tony Smith, exhibitions manager for Art at the Heart, expressed excitement about the return of Jigantics’ work. “We are delighted to welcome Jigantics back to the RUH for the Christmas and New Year period. Their designs are not only visually stunning but help create an uplifting atmosphere for both patients and staff.”
