Valentine’s Day is here, and roses are as popular as ever—but they’re also getting more expensive. A dozen long-stem red roses in the U.S. now cost around $90, a 2% increase from last year. For many, nearly $100 for flowers that don’t last long can feel like a steep price to pay.
If you’re looking for more budget-friendly Valentine’s Day gifts, there are plenty of affordable alternatives.
Brooke Emling, an experienced bargain shopper, says she loves flowers but typically opts for a dinner date with her boyfriend instead. “I’m an experienced girl,” she said while shopping at Walmart. Walmart manager Jayna Hill says this approach is becoming more common, with customers looking for gifts like date night games and low-cost items like stuffed bears or $5 Bricktanicals building sets. For example, you can build a $10 chocolate box or a $5 long-stem rose with these sets.
Walmart’s alternative gifts are a hit, especially for those who may be allergic to flowers or want something a bit different this year.
Another affordable choice is chocolates. Tracy Oenbrink, the shop manager at Aglamesis Brothers Gourmet Chocolates in Cincinnati, says they offer options for all budgets. You can grab a 2-pound box of chocolates or a $5.50 2-ounce box of chocolate hearts. “Everything is gift-wrapped, so you don’t have to worry about it,” Oenbrink said.
Retail expert Stephanie Carls of RetailMeNot also highlights fashion as a top gift category this year, with cozy lounge sets, stylish accessories, and even sneakers making the list. Other great ideas include personalized necklaces, tumblers, and kitchen items like a tea infuser or French press. Monthly subscription boxes for books or beauty products are also popular options.
If you’re in a rush, Carls suggests opting for a digital gift card. “They can be a lifesaver,” she said, recommending options for spa visits, nail salons, or favorite stores.
To save on your Valentine’s Day gifts, Carls advises shopping early, comparing prices, and taking advantage of cashback offers. A tool like RetailMeNot’s browser extension can automatically apply promo codes and cashback deals for extra savings.
At Aglamesis Brothers, Chanelle Combs was picking up chocolates for her mom. “We’re flying out today, so we want to give it to her in person,” she said, emphasizing that simple, thoughtful gifts don’t have to break the bank.
