Authorities seized thousands of marijuana plants and arrested multiple suspects during a raid on an illegal growing operation Thursday, the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office announced.
Deputies discovered more than 3,400 cannabis plants and 111 pounds of processed marijuana at the site. Officials confirmed the operation was run by Maine residents but did not disclose the exact location. Several people arrested during the raid were not state residents, though their identities and charges remain unclear.
“This was a coordinated effort to target illegal drug activity in our community,” a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office said. While Maine legalized recreational marijuana in 2020, unlicensed grows remain prohibited.
The bust highlights ongoing challenges in regulating cannabis despite state legalization. Investigations into the operation are ongoing, with officials urging residents to report suspicious activities.
