Native plants are ideal for home gardens because they are well-suited to local soil and weather conditions. They also support songbirds and pollinators like butterflies and bees. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is organizing a native plant sale on Saturday, March 29, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at the Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs.
Vendors from Missouri Wildflowers Nursery and City Roots Nursery and Landscape will be present, offering native plants while supplies last. Visitors will have the opportunity not only to purchase these plants but also to receive gardening tips from the vendors.
Native wildflowers bloom at different times, providing color throughout spring, summer, and fall. They add interesting structure to gardens during winter.
These plants are particularly beneficial for birds, as they host insects that are crucial for feeding baby birds during nesting season. Pollinators like butterflies and bees also benefit because they have evolved to rely on native plants for food and as hosts for their eggs and larvae.
