As spring arrives, flowers take center stage, brightening gardens and homes across the country. National Flower Day, observed on March 21, marks the seasonal change, celebrating the beauty of blooms. While the official National Flower of the U.S. is the rose—also the state flower of New York—many other varieties capture people’s attention.
To find out which flowers are truly the most beloved, data analytics company YDAFT analyzed recent Google Trends data. Their research determined the most searched flowers in every state, highlighting surprising favorites beyond the classic rose.
The Most Popular Flowers by State
YDAFT compiled a list of 85 common flowers and tracked search trends across all 50 states. Four flowers emerged as the most popular across multiple regions:
Roses: America’s Undisputed Favorite
Roses remain the most popular flower nationwide, topping the list in eight states: Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, New Jersey, and New York. Their enduring appeal isn’t surprising, as they are also the most purchased flowers in the country.
Marigolds: A Garden Essential
Marigolds, with their bright orange and yellow hues, were the top choice in five states: Colorado, Delaware, Kansas, Missouri, and Wisconsin. These vibrant blooms are popular among gardeners, not only for their beauty but also for their natural ability to repel pests.
Hydrangeas: A Southern Favorite
Hydrangeas ranked as the most searched flower in Alabama, Connecticut, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. Though known for their delicate appearance, they require careful maintenance, which may explain their frequent online searches.
Sunflowers: A Symbol of Sunshine
Sunflowers, typically associated with late summer and fall, were surprisingly popular this season. Residents of Kentucky, New Mexico, and North Dakota searched for them the most, likely drawn to their bright, cheerful appearance and ability to thrive in open, sunny landscapes.
Uncommon Floral Favorites
While roses and hydrangeas dominate the rankings, several states showed unique floral preferences based on local climate, gardening trends, and cultural influences.
Tulips: A Springtime Favorite
Texas and Oklahoma had the highest search interest in tulips, which aligns with the region’s prime planting season. Many gardeners seek to add a last burst of color to their spring landscapes before the heat of summer arrives.
Snapdragons: A Western Bloom
Idaho and Wyoming favored snapdragons, a hardy flower known for its early spring bloom. Their shared preference could be influenced by the states’ similar climates, where snapdragons thrive in cooler temperatures.
Orchids: Exotic Elegance in Hawaii
In Hawaii, orchids ranked as the most searched flower. These tropical blooms are a staple in Hawaiian culture, often used in leis and floral arrangements. However, with the right care, orchids can thrive in homes across the U.S.
America’s Love Affair with Flowers
According to YDAFT’s research, 88% of Americans feel happier after purchasing flowers. While roses may still reign as the nation’s top bloom, the data reveal a diverse range of floral preferences across different regions. Whether it’s the classic hydrangea, the cheerful sunflower, or the exotic orchid, flowers continue to bring beauty and joy to people across the country.
