Strong Growth Predicted for Flemish Ornamental Plant Sector in 2023

by Anna

In Belgium, Boerenbond has reported a robust outlook for the ornamental plant sector in Flemish agriculture and horticulture in 2023. With an estimated turnover of 7.7 billion euros, this represents a 5% increase from the previous year and a remarkable 24.7% surge compared to the five-year average from 2018 to 2022.

The ornamental plant cultivation segment stands out, contributing 7.4% to the overall turnover of Flemish agriculture. In 2023, the sector is anticipated to experience a 3.6% growth in turnover, primarily attributed to expanded sales in tree cultivation.

While the year presented challenges for the cut flower segment, characterized by an energy crisis that disrupted production planning, a mild spring helped regain momentum. Despite a productive summer, sales figures fell short of expectations, impacting prices.

Green plant production maintained stability in both output and prices, with smaller plant production showing a decline, rebalancing supply and demand. High investment costs and energy requirements have deterred new entrants in the sector.

Floral products, including bedding and flowering plants, saw a cautious start to the season, influenced by energy concerns and retail hesitancy. However, a relatively low production in 2023, compared to the previous year, led to decent sales and maintained price levels.

Azalea sales experienced volatility due to inclement weather in Belgium, Italy, and moderate sales to France.

Bulb and tuberous flower production is set to decrease by 5-6% in 2023, attributed to extended periods of rain and drought. Tuberous begonia acreage fell from 34 hectares in 2022 to 32 hectares in 2023.

The tree nursery sector, encompassing garden plants, continued to grow, reflecting increased awareness of urban greenery’s significance. Although the market has normalized, higher labor costs have created challenges for the sector.

Notably, the global ornamental plant sector saw the tree nursery sector responsible for 60% of sales, with the remaining 40% originating from the ornamental plant sector. A 3.6% increase in sales is predicted for the ornamental plant sector in 2023 compared to the previous year, emphasizing its resilience and potential for growth.
