Changing Seasons and Vibrant Colors Shape the Floral Auction Market

by Anna

The auction floor reflects the ebb and flow of seasons, each bringing its unique palette of colors to the world of floriculture. Royal FloraHolland Auctioneer Luus Hooyman not only appreciates the dynamic shift in seasons but also acknowledges the Netherlands’ unpredictable weather as a significant factor affecting the auction’s atmosphere. In her column below, she anticipates an exciting autumn marked by central auctioning and the upcoming Trade Fair Aalsmeer, the renowned international floriculture event.

This year, we were graced with a delightful Indian summer, followed by the first chilly nights of autumn. The changing seasons create a magical dance on the auction floor, with nature’s vibrancy mirrored in the offerings. For those who work amidst flowers and plants, it’s a captivating spectacle. Presently, the predominant colors are shades of yellow, orange, warm red, and purple. The products include autumnal blooms like chrysanthemums and lilies, alongside branches, grasses, berries, heather, Skimmia, pumpkins, and other evergreens.

Interestingly, the color white isn’t topping the shopping lists at the moment, causing products with this hue to lag slightly in price. However, this is expected to change, as experience shows that November 1 will see a surge in demand for white flowers. What’s peculiar about pricing is that it’s significantly influenced by the Dutch weather. If the climate remains too warm in this small, chilly country, resulting in higher supply (warm nights included), buyer enthusiasm tends to wane. This quirk is puzzling since the majority of these blooms head to far-flung destinations anyway.

As we usher in a new season, marked by a fresh array of products, the supply of Dutch-grown produce from abroad is expected to decrease. This period promises to be intriguing and eventful, with pivotal developments on the horizon. Central auctioning is on the verge of implementation. Moreover, from November 7 to 9, Royal FloraHolland is set to host Trade Fair Aalsmeer, an international floriculture exhibition boasting exquisite showcases. This event offers a splendid opportunity to connect with suppliers, colleagues, buyers, and flower and plant enthusiasts. If you attend the Trade Fair, consider stopping by the digital clock. Though transformed, it remains an absorbing spectacle, and we’ll have coffee ready to share in the experience.
