In a collaborative effort led by Gerbera United and fellow gerbera growers, a large-scale initiative is set to begin employing Sticky discs from Royal Brinkman to combat the persistent threat of ring leg earworms. Gerbera United’s nurseries in Nootdorp, Moerkapelle, and Zevenhuizen in the Netherlands will strategically place Sticky discs beneath all cultivation gutters to address the challenges posed by these light-shy and moisture-loving pests.
Ring-legged earworms, known for their destructive impact on gerbera crops, have become a growing concern as broad-spectrum pesticides are phased out. The species-dependent damage caused by ring leg earworms, especially when attacking young flower buds, has prompted a comprehensive approach to protect crops and minimize losses.
Gijsbert Verboom of Gerbera United explored various biological agents to combat the issue, with limited success. Eventually, a novel method involving shielding pipes, hoses, and stands was considered. Tests using upside-down glued coffee cups proved effective, leading to collaboration with Royal Brinkman to develop a practical solution.
The result is the yellow Sticky disc, a one-sided adhesive disc with a cut-out core and a click system. Available in two diameters – 132 mm for cultivation gutter stands and 165 mm for drain hoses and water hoses – the Sticky discs are strategically placed during gerbera cultivation changes, making all points easily accessible.
Gerbera United has committed to implementing Sticky discs across all cultivation departments, both in new and existing sections. During crop rotations, the discs will permanently eliminate ring-legged earworms in new sections, while existing sections will be equipped with Sticky discs to prevent further infestations.
Gijsbert Verboom emphasized the importance of this proactive measure: “We are going to use the Sticky discs at all our nurseries, in new and existing sections. During the crop rotation, we will then permanently eliminate ring-legged earworm in the new sections. In the sections with existing crops, we also place Sticky discs to prevent more ring leg earworms from coming to the surface. To keep the damage limited.”
Royal Brinkman, deeply involved in the Sticky disc’s development, sees it as a collaborative effort to enhance results. The product exemplifies the company’s commitment to improving crop outcomes in tandem with growers. Sticky discs can be customized to fit all lines under cultivation gutters, accommodating various stand shapes with options for rectangular cores.
