The eagerly awaited Groundswell Network Society’s annual Mother’s Day plant sale is scheduled for this Saturday, May 11, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Groundswell Greenhouse located at 1535 14th Street. Excitingly, this year’s event has been expanded to feature not only a diverse array of plants but also an artisan market, alongside a series of engaging presentations throughout the day.
Esteemed speakers such as Georgie West, Len Sandrin, Morag Turnbull, and Anna Grant are set to deliver informative mini talks covering a wide range of topics, including bats, tomatoes, dahlias, and square foot gardening.
In a bid to offer added value to its loyal members, the organizers have introduced a special perk: members will have the exclusive opportunity to access the event one hour early, starting at 10 a.m.
Given the overwhelming response witnessed last year, with queues stretching around the block even before the official opening at 11 a.m., organizers have implemented some changes to enhance the overall experience. Those without an annual membership, priced between $25 and $100, still have the chance to sign up before the event kicks off, by visiting groundswellnetwork.ca.
This highly anticipated event serves as the primary fundraiser for Groundswell, with a staggering selection of over 800 tomato plants and an assortment of herbs, vegetables, and flowers available for purchase, catering to every gardening enthusiast. Prices for most plants will range between $5 and $8.
Michelle Wall, board chair of the Groundswell Network Society, emphasized the organization’s commitment to fostering a community where nutritious food is accessible to all. “Through our annual plant sale and the exciting addition of an artisan market this year, we are dedicated to raising vital funds that support our mission in fulfilling this vision,” she stated.
Deb Griffith, Partnership Director, will be on-site during the event, offering her expertise as a garden guru to address any queries from attendees and to engage with market visitors.
Reflecting on the organization’s achievements, Griffith expressed her anticipation for the upcoming event, stating, “It’s been another exciting year at Groundswell. I am looking forward to seeing everyone join in at our festive plant sale and help support our efforts to teach gardening to our community, to ensure we all eat more healthy local food.”
