Tips for Maintaining Your Lawn and Plants During Hot Weather

GREENWOOD, Ind. — With a lack of substantial rainfall, there’s a heightened risk of flash droughts.

June typically sees the highest precipitation in Indianapolis, but this month has been notably dry, with less than an inch of rain since June 1.

These conditions pose challenges for home gardeners, as the current heat can quickly dehydrate plants.

“Your lawn and plants generally require about an inch of water per week,” advised local horticulturist Bob Milne. “With the heat causing rapid transpiration, plants absorb moisture from the soil faster.”

Milne and Garry Ward, owner of McCammon’s Irish Market, emphasized the importance of timing when watering plants.

“The optimal time to water is in the morning,” Ward recommended. “Providing a thorough watering before temperatures rise helps prevent root scorching if watered later in the hot afternoon.”

Newly potted or hanging plants might benefit from watering twice daily, but it’s crucial not to leave plants wet overnight.

“Wet foliage in the evening can lead to increased disease risks, especially with high night temperatures and humidity,” Milne cautioned. “Fungal infections thrive under these conditions.”

Proper watering technique is also essential.

“Avoid spraying water directly onto the foliage,” Milne advised. “Instead, aim for the base of the plant and water slowly.”

Overwatering can be detrimental as well.

“For newly planted vegetation, check how quickly water drains from the soil,” Milne suggested. “If water remains in the hole for more than 24 hours, consider relocating the plant.”

Concerning lawns, Milne reassured that allowing them to go dormant during dry spells is natural.

“If your lawn starts turning brown due to inadequate watering, don’t panic,” he said. “Grass can enter a dormant state and will recover once it receives sufficient water or rainfall.”

For those with sprinkler systems, Milne recommended scheduling watering sessions for the morning hours to maximize effectiveness.

Following these guidelines can help ensure your plants and lawn remain healthy during periods of hot and dry weather.
