Hyderabad: Gudimalkapur Flower Market Faces Surge in Demand Amidst High Prices.
The Gudimalkapur flower market in Hyderabad, the largest in Telangana, is experiencing double the usual demand this festive season. The prices of flowers have surged due to the high demand associated with Bonalu and the Shravan month.
Popular flowers such as Champa (plumeria), mogra (jasmine), rose, parijat, and datura are seeing a significant uptick in demand. During the festival, the market handles 12,904 kg of chrysanthemum (chamanthi) flowers, a substantial increase compared to its regular intake throughout the year. Typically, chamanthi costs around Rs 100 per kg, but during the festival, the price has surged to Rs 300 per kg.
Flowers are sourced from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and West Bengal. Venkat Reddy, a local flower shop owner, told Deccan Chronicle, “The market sees a huge influx of people only during festival times. After two or three days, the crowd returns to normal. I’ve been here for 12 years, and we raise prices when demand is high and production is low.”
Another retailer added, “I purchase flowers daily. Price increases during festivals are expected. We buy daily to avoid spoilage. Although customers often request lower prices, we cannot accommodate their demands during peak festival season.”
