Visakhapatnam: Heavy Rains Boost Plant Growth and Cause Flooding.
Visakhapatnam has experienced heavy rainfall since Wednesday, leading to a significant increase in plant growth along roadsides and up utility poles. Notably, an arch of creepers now stretches from one side of Dabagardens Road to the other, becoming a local attraction. Similar scenes of lush greenery are visible on roads and in corners throughout the port city. The recent rains have not only caused widespread flooding but also created ideal conditions for rapid plant growth.
Retired botany professor Venkayya discussed the effects of the rain on local vegetation with Deccan Chronicle. He observed that weeds such as Tridax and Acalypha indica, along with various grasses, are flourishing along roads. Professor Venkayya also highlighted the growth of medicinal plants like Phyllanthus niruri, used to treat jaundice, and Boerhavia diffusa, known for its medicinal benefits. However, he warned that some plants, while not dangerous, can cause irritation. Tragia, a plant common in Visakhapatnam, is one such example.
The ongoing rains, while beneficial for plant life, have led to significant water accumulation in several parts of the city. Areas such as PM Palem, Madhurawada, and Jagadamba Centre have seen knee-deep water, making travel difficult for pedestrians. Motor vehicles have struggled to navigate the flooded streets. In response to the severe weather and widespread flooding, local authorities have declared a holiday for schools in Visakhapatnam and neighboring districts.
