Flowers are often used to express love and affection. While a single red rose says “I love you,” a garden of pink blooms can make an even more powerful statement. One man from Japan took this idea to a remarkable new level in an effort to brighten his wife’s life.
Mr. and Mrs. Kuroki were married in 1956. The couple settled on a dairy farm in Shintomi, Japan, according to The Telegraph. Together, they raised two children and enjoyed a full life. After 30 years of marriage, the couple made plans to retire and travel around Japan. Unfortunately, those dreams were soon shattered.
At age 52, Mrs. Kuroki lost her vision due to complications from diabetes. The loss of her sight deeply affected her, and she became withdrawn, spending her days indoors. Mr. Kuroki, seeing how depressed his wife had become, was determined to find a way to lift her spirits.
One day, Mr. Kuroki noticed people stopping to admire a small patch of pink shibazakura, also known as moss phlox, in his garden. That’s when he had an idea: If his wife could no longer see the beauty of the world, he would bring the world’s beauty to her.
With this thought in mind, Mr. Kuroki set out to transform his garden. He began planting thousands of pink flowers, hoping that their fragrance would bring joy to his wife, even if she couldn’t see them. Over the course of two years, he filled the garden with vibrant blooms, working tirelessly to make his vision a reality.
His efforts paid off. The garden soon became a popular attraction, drawing visitors from near and far. More importantly, Mrs. Kuroki, though unable to see the flowers, began to enjoy the attention and the company of the visitors who came to admire her husband’s creation. She could be seen smiling as she walked through the garden, surrounded by the beauty her husband had created for her.
Today, the garden is a major tourist destination, particularly during the bloom season in March and April. On peak days, up to 7,000 people visit the site. The Kuroki family’s cowshed, once home to 60 cows, has been converted into an exhibit telling the story of Mr. Kuroki’s extraordinary gesture of love.
