Spotted Lanternflies: A Growing Threat to Local Farms and Plants

BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — Residents of Belmont County are expressing growing concerns over the presence of spotted lanternflies, an invasive pest that poses a threat to local agriculture and plant life.

Originating from Asia, these insects have now spread across the United States, causing significant damage to crops and plants.

Hannah Ulrich, district program administrator for the Belmont Soil and Water Conservation District, explains, “Spotted lanternflies primarily feed on the Tree-of-Heaven, also known as Ailanthus, which is itself an invasive species. While this is somewhat beneficial for us, they also target grapevines and stone fruits, making orchards and vineyards highly susceptible.”

The main issue with these pests is not just their feeding habits but the honeydew they excrete. This substance promotes the growth of black sooty mold, which can ultimately kill the plants.

Unfortunately, Ulrich notes that there are limited ways to prevent the lanternflies from entering new areas. “To minimize the spread, if you are traveling through infested regions like Pittsburgh or Washington, Pa., make sure to visit a car wash. This helps remove any lanternflies that might have hitched a ride.”

Belmont County is classified as a quarantine area due to its proximity to infested regions. For those who prefer not to kill the insects directly, Ulrich suggests using soapy water or rubbing alcohol as alternatives.

However, the most crucial step in combating this pest is to remove their egg masses. These masses appear as gray or brownish smears of mud and should be scraped off with a hard plastic tool. “Spotted lanternflies are not particular about where they lay their eggs,” Ulrich adds. “They choose any sheltered spot, such as fence posts, lawn furniture, or barbecue equipment.”

Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take action to protect their local environment from this invasive species.
