Invasive Plant Hike at Clark Reservation

by Anna

An event focused on removing invasive plants is taking place this morning at Clark Reservation State Park, located at 6105 E. Seneca Turnpike in Jamesville.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Its main goal is to eliminate invasive plants that threaten native species of plants, insects, and wildlife.

The day will start with a half-hour hike on the mostly flat Mildred Faust Trail. Participants will learn about various invasive species and understand how they disrupt the local ecosystem.

Following the hike, attendees will engage in hands-on activities by digging up and removing invasive plants from the park. Organizers will provide all necessary tools and gloves. Participants are encouraged to wear suitable hiking or work clothes and to apply sunscreen and bug repellent. Spencer Van Epps, a specialist with the NYS Central Region FORCES Program, is organizing the event.

Next weekend, on Saturday, October 5, Clark Reservation will host a scavenger hunt starting near the playground. This event aims to educate participants about the significance of the bright mushrooms appearing in the park and the various animal tracks found along the trails.

The scavenger hunt, designed for young naturalists and attendees of all ages, will run from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. It will include a guided hike, allowing everyone to explore the vibrant signs of life within the fall ecosystem.
