Amarillo Nursery Offers Tips for Safeguarding Plants Before Cold Weather

AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – As fall and winter approach, Coulter Gardens and Nursery is offering advice to help gardeners protect their flowers and plants.

Warren Reid, the owner of Coulter Gardens and Nursery, recommends moving tropical plants indoors when nighttime temperatures drop below 55 degrees. This includes plants like pothos, ivies, ferns, and sansevieria. While temperatures below 55 degrees won’t kill these plants, they do not thrive in such conditions.

Before bringing plants inside, Reid emphasizes the importance of washing them. This step helps remove any insects that may be living on the plants.

Another common misconception is the use of plastic to protect plants from cold temperatures. Reid warns that using plastic coverings can cause more harm than good. Both cold and warm air can easily transfer through plastic, potentially damaging the plants.

“When trying to protect plants from a few degrees of cold, always use cloth,” Reid advises. “Plastic only works if you build a greenhouse and add a heater. Sheets or plastic bags provide no benefit. However, cloth can help protect plants by about five degrees.”
