Preparing Your Garden for Winter: Essential Tips.
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – As the seasons shift, the needs of your garden also change.
With lower temperatures and less daylight, plant growth slows down, and many plants enter a state of dormancy. Different species of plants prepare for winter in various ways. While annuals often lose their leaves entirely, perennials focus on storing energy.
“Depending on the plants, some annuals may die back completely because they are not hardy in our area. In contrast, perennials will start to go dormant. Trees will shed their leaves, and shrubs will also prepare for winter,” said Kirstin Royer, the house plant manager at Jackson’s Greenhouse.
To protect your plants during this transition, Royer recommends mulching. “You want to mulch them now. There are certain plants you shouldn’t cut back because you’ll remove the blooms for next year,” she added.
However, not all plants can withstand the cold. Freezing temperatures can damage their cells, making additional protection necessary.
“There are some plants that need to come indoors because they are temperature-sensitive. If you don’t bring them in, they won’t survive. That’s the bottom line,” said Mark Wanamaker, a customer at Jackson’s Greenhouse.
By properly preparing your garden, you can help your plants survive the winter and return stronger in the spring.
