West Hartford Garden Club Hosts Educational Event on Invasive Plants.
WEST HARTFORD, CT — The West Hartford Garden Club is organizing a special event on Sunday to combat invasive plant species in a local park and educate residents on how to manage these plants on their properties.
The event, titled “Invasive Plant Educational Walk and Removal Party,” will take place on Sunday, October 20, from noon to 3 p.m. at Spicebush Swamp Park, located at 173 Mountain Road.
Beth Ann Loveland Sennett, a master gardener and club representative, emphasized the program’s focus. “We will stress identification and low-impact removal techniques,” she said. Participants interested in attending can contact Sennett via email, text, or phone to help with planning. She will provide handouts and offer guidance throughout the event.
Sennett cautioned that the terrain in the work areas is uneven and may be muddy, which could pose challenges for individuals with mobility issues.
Participants are advised to park in the small lot on Mountain Road or across the street on Gloucester Lane. Caution is urged while crossing Mountain Road, as it is a busy thoroughfare.
“Our group has been successful in using low-impact removal methods. We mainly cut invasive plants to soil level to stop photosynthesis and exhaust their roots,” Sennett explained.
She added, “We are working to restore this park by removing stubborn invasive plants that have harmed the area and replacing them with native plants whenever possible.”
