Winterize Your Garden: Prepare Plants for Cold Weather with Smith’s Gardentown

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — As temperatures begin to drop, Smith’s Gardentown is reminding residents to take precautions with their plants that may be vulnerable to the cold.

Michael Fiore, president of Smith’s Gardentown, explained that tropical plants typically struggle when temperatures fall to 40 degrees or below. He advised plant enthusiasts to be cautious when bringing these plants indoors to prevent insect infestations.

Fiore suggested that homeowners spray outdoor plants with water or a safe pesticide before moving them inside. For those looking for plants that can endure colder weather, Smith’s Gardentown offers a wide variety.

“For individuals planting annuals in porch pots or flower beds, it’s time to remove summer plants and replace them with fall varieties like ornamental cabbage, kale, Swiss chard, and pansies,” Fiore said. “We sell a large number of pansies this time of year because they can tolerate the winter temperatures.”

Fiore also announced that this year’s poinsettias will soon be available. The public can view the festive plants during the store’s Christmas open house on Sunday, November 24.
