A New Mexico State University (NMSU) researcher led an international team in a study exploring the effects of invasive plant species on ecosystems.
The findings were recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Magda Garbowski, an assistant professor of restoration ecology in NMSU’s College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, conducted the research as part of a working group with the USGS John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis. The team aimed to uncover the missing link between plant invasions and the changes they cause in ecosystem functions. Specifically, they focused on how invasive species affect the functional traits of plant communities.
