SAN ANGELO, Texas — With the arrival of cooler weather in West Texas, many gardeners are wondering how the dropping temperatures will affect their plants.
As the region experiences fluctuating fall temperatures, it can be tricky to know which plants will thrive during the brief periods when temperatures hover just above freezing. However, local landscaper Tam Honaker, owner of Farmer’s Daughter Landscaping, reassures gardeners that most plants will be fine as long as temperatures stay above 32 degrees.
“Geraniums, farfugiums, tractor seeds, and mangaves—they’ll all do well,” said Honaker. “Fifty degrees is ideal for plant growth. We don’t need to worry unless temperatures drop below freezing. That’s when we need to take extra care.”
Honaker also pointed out that plants that struggle in the cold are typically nearing the end of their growing cycles. In contrast, cooler weather is beneficial for vegetables like spinach and kale, which thrive in the fall season.
