The Gore Gardens were recently uprooted, and all the old flowers were given away to the local community. This event, which revived a tradition of distributing bedding plants from summer displays, was organized by Gore District Council’s parks and recreation manager, Keith McRobie.
The practice had previously been hosted by the Gore Borough Council. Mr. McRobie was inspired by a social media post to bring the giveaway back and reported that the event was a success.
“The event went really well, with residents arriving as early as 8am to collect plants for their own gardens,” he said in a statement.
According to Mr. McRobie, the giveaway offered a practical solution for the plants, which had been displayed for two seasons and were no longer suitable for public use.
“Normally, most of our bedding plants end up in the compost heap. This was a great way to repurpose them and give back to the community,” he explained.
Given the strong public response, future giveaways are scheduled for late March and November.
Gardener Jess Dore, who learned about the event on Facebook, was excited to give her garden a boost.
“I was thrilled. We’ve been trying to start a flower garden, and this is really helpful,” she said. “The plants are already established, so we can just put them in, and they’ll start growing right away.”
