Festive Creations Using Indoor and Garden Plants

by Anna

Winter doesn’t have to keep you from enjoying nature inside your home. Take a break from the holiday chaos and bring a bit of greenery into your space with a DIY centerpiece or décor made from garden treasures. Grab a pruner and basket, head outside, and collect evergreen branches, berry stems, and cones to create your own festive decorations.

No garden? No problem. Reach out to a gardening friend for a few items from their garden. You can even make it a fun activity by inviting them to join you in creating their own arrangements.

Start by gathering a variety of evergreen branches to provide a solid base for your project. Sprays of arborvitae, sprigs of juniper, and stems from pines, spruces, boxwoods, and yews offer a rich, green backdrop.

Next, look for interesting shapes and colors from mixed borders and hedges. Red and yellow twig dogwoods, curly willow, contorted filbert, and fantail willow add unique textures and colors.

Don’t forget to pick up cones, berries, and fruit. Rose hips, juniper berries, sweet gum seedpods, and alder cones are great alternatives to flowers and can add a natural touch to your arrangement.

You can also visit your flower garden to collect seedheads from coneflowers, alliums, penstemon, milkweeds, and balloon plants. Fluffy seed heads from ornamental and native grasses work well as fillers. These natural elements can be added to your centerpiece, or you can paint or glitter them for a bit of extra sparkle. And, of course, a few shiny ornaments can help bring in some holiday cheer.

Don’t forget to dress up your indoor plants for the season. Add glittery holiday picks, faux berries, silk flowers, and other decorative ornaments to small potted plants to create festive centerpieces. For larger plants, these touches can add seasonal color and interest to your décor.

If you want to add some fresh flowers, visit your local florist or garden center to buy a few water picks and cut flowers. Place these flowers in the picks and insert them into your houseplants for a burst of color.

For a more lasting holiday display, update your indoor plants seasonally. You can plant several compatible plants in a large container, then place a smaller potted flowering plant, like a miniature poinsettia or cyclamen, in the center. You can switch the flowers as they fade to keep the display fresh and festive.

If you want to make it easier, you can fill a large basket with individually potted plants. This way, you can swap out flowers and plants based on the season, your mood, or your décor.

These DIY creations also make great gifts. You and the recipient can enjoy the beauty and cheer of your festive arrangements all season long.
