The Biology Student Association (BSA) at California State University, Stanislaus, hosted a successful plant sale on February 12 in the Naraghi Hall of Science, providing students with an opportunity to enhance their living spaces with greenery. This event featured a diverse selection of plants, including vibrant tropical varieties and miniature succulents, all cultivated in the campus greenhouse.
Elias Figueiredo, the BSA President and a senior biology major, highlighted that the sale not only supports the association but also contributes to the greenhouse’s upkeep. A portion of the proceeds will be allocated to future events and activities organized by the club. Figueiredo emphasized the event’s role in fostering community connections among students who share a passion for plants.
Allison Shewfelt, BSA Treasurer and junior biology student, elaborated on the dual purpose of the sale: supporting both the greenhouse and the club itself. The arrangement with their advisor allows the greenhouse to receive 40% of sales while the club retains 60%. Shewfelt noted that this initiative promotes awareness of plant care and encourages student involvement in the biology club.
Attendees such as Teisy Zavala-Cortez, a senior in Creative Media, expressed enthusiasm for the event, recognizing it as an excellent opportunity for students interested in plants. She noted the abundance of succulents available, which are well-suited for campus conditions. Zavala-Cortez remarked on how such events cultivate a sense of community by bringing together individuals with shared interests in nature and sustainability.
Overall, the BSA plant sale not only provided students with affordable plant options but also served as a platform for promoting environmental awareness and encouraging participation in campus life.
