Spring is flourishing at the Garfield Park Conservatory, where the “Rooted in Mystery” exhibit takes visitors on a journey beneath the soil to discover the vital role of plant roots.
This year’s show, which took over a year to plan, offers a vibrant display of tulips, azaleas, pansies, and snapdragons, all while educating visitors on the unseen wonders beneath the surface.
Matt Barrett, Deputy Director of Conservatories, explained how the preparation for the show begins in the fall, simulating a dormant period for bulbs in a walk-in cooler before bringing them into the greenhouse to bloom.
Visitors can explore other areas of the conservatory, like the towering palm house and the lush fern room, making it an ideal weekend destination for families. “It’s a great way to escape the cold and gray and see what’s coming up in the next few months,” Barrett added.
Meanwhile, across the city, the Lincoln Park Conservatory’s “Spectrum of Spring” exhibit takes a colorful approach, grouping plants by color to showcase the beautiful subtleties between different shades of purple, red, blue, and pink.
Both flower shows are open now, offering an early taste of spring’s beauty. Chicago residents can enjoy free admission, with reservations recommended to ensure a smooth visit.
