Union Square Welcomes Spring With 170,000 Free Tulips

by Anna

For the second consecutive year, Union Square in Manhattan will transform into a vibrant tulip garden, offering 170,000 free tulips for visitors to pick and take home. This year’s Tulip Day will take place on March 30, marking a festive welcome to spring in New York City.

The event is a collaborative effort between Royal Anthos, an international organization specializing in flower and tree agriculture, NYC Parks, the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York, and the Union Square Partnership. The U.S. is the largest importer of tulip bulbs globally, with over a billion bulbs brought in annually, though the flowers are grown locally.

Last year’s Tulip Day was described as “a delight to behold” by Julie Stein, Executive Director of the Union Square Partnership. Mark-Jan Terwindt, CEO of Royal Anthos, noted that the event has become a cherished spring tradition in New York City, bringing European floral charm to Manhattan.

NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue highlighted the significance of tulips as a symbol of spring’s arrival, adding color to the cityscape. The event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on March 30, with advance registration opening on March 17. Both registration and the tulips are free, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for all New Yorkers.
