Filoli Gardens Welcomes Spring With A Stunning Floral Display

by Anna

The arrival of spring has transformed Filoli Gardens into a breathtaking canvas of color, with thousands of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths now in full bloom. The much-anticipated Spring Flower Display, which opened on March 3, invites visitors to explore a vibrant landscape where nature and artistry intertwine.

Spanning 654 acres of gardens, trails, and diverse ecosystems, Filoli is renowned for its seasonal exhibitions, with spring being one of the most celebrated. The display, which runs through May, is a testament to months of meticulous planning and horticultural expertise.

The magic of Filoli’s spring transformation begins long before the first blooms appear.

“Our spring display is planted in November and December in conjunction with the holiday lights,” explained Haley O’Connor, Filoli’s Formal Garden Manager. “This ensures everything grows and blossoms right on time for the new season.”

Each year’s floral arrangements build upon the successes of previous displays. Adjustments are made based on color schemes, plant health, and visitor feedback.

“Maybe we experimented with peach or apricot tones last year and decided we wanted something bolder,” O’Connor said. “This year, we’ll bring in more reds and vibrant hues to enhance the gardens’ visual appeal.”

Filoli Gardens is not only committed to aesthetics but also to sustainability. Water conservation is a key priority, particularly in areas like the Sunken Garden, where drought-resistant plants have been incorporated.

“For the past three years, we have created a pretty dry garden that has significantly reduced our water usage,” O’Connor noted. “While we still maintain certain areas like the turf, almost everything else follows a xeriscape model, requiring minimal irrigation.”

For garden lovers, Filoli’s spring showcase is more than just a feast for the eyes—it’s an immersive experience. Visitors can stroll through themed floral arrangements, take guided tours, and participate in seasonal events like the beloved Spring Teas, where guests enjoy afternoon tea in the historic Garden House.

Local visitors have already expressed their enthusiasm for this year’s display.

“I love visiting Filoli Gardens in the spring,” said Yashvi Shah, a Carlmont student. “The guided tours give so much insight into the different kinds of flowers—it’s always a new experience.”

Fellow visitor Kiyo Aretun agreed, praising the thoughtful design of the gardens.

“This year’s layout is easy to navigate, and there’s a great mix of flowers and other plants,” Aretun said.

While spring is one of Filoli’s most celebrated seasons, the team is constantly evolving the garden experience, evaluating displays, and incorporating new ideas to keep the gardens fresh and exciting year after year.

“We are always looking at ways to enhance the experience,” O’Connor said. “The goal is to create an ever-changing, living masterpiece that keeps people coming back.”

With thousands of flowers in bloom and a lineup of seasonal events, Filoli Gardens is poised for another unforgettable spring.
