As spring arrives, gardeners are gearing up to create vibrant flower beds and lush vegetable gardens. For many, plant sales are a highlight of the season, offering a wide variety of plants and expert advice. This year, the Halifax County Master Gardeners are hosting their annual plant sale on May 3 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Halifax Farmers Market parking lot.
What to Expect
The sale will feature a diverse selection of plants, including colorful flowers like purple zinnias, which thrive in full sun and bloom throughout the summer. These zinnias are particularly appealing because they deter deer, making them ideal for gardeners with wildlife visitors. Additionally, Hellebore or Lenten rose slips will be available, known for their early blooms in February and March, and also deer-resistant.
In past years, the sale has included a range of garden vegetable plants such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. This year, enthusiasts are hoping for rare varieties like Cherokee purple tomatoes. Beyond plants, the event will feature craft tables showcasing handmade items like teacup birdhouses and bird feeders, as well as educational demonstrations on mushroom growing, seed propagation, and garden tool sharpening.
Community Impact
The funds raised from the plant sale will support local community groups, including the 4-H camps, helping Halifax campers participate in these programs. The Master Gardeners, trained volunteers with the Virginia Tech Extension, will be on hand to answer questions and provide gardening advice.
Becoming a Master Gardener
For those interested in gardening, the Master Gardener program offers a comprehensive course that includes 16 weeks of classes and volunteer hours. Participants gain hands-on experience and the opportunity to work with experts at local gardens. Even small gardens or patio pots can be transformed into thriving spaces for vegetables, herbs, and flowers, providing fresh produce while improving air quality.
Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, the Master Gardener Plant Sale is an event not to miss. It’s a chance to enhance your garden, learn from experts, and support local community initiatives.
