As Mother’s Day nears, it’s not just backyard gardens that are bursting into bloom—an incredible 20,000 tons of fresh flowers are on the move from Colombia and Ecuador to homes and flower shops around the world.
From April 15 to May 9, Aerosan, a company that helps transport these delicate blossoms, is working with airlines and exporters to ensure every petal arrives perfectly fresh.
Colombia is expected to ship about 8,705 tons of flowers, including familiar favorites like roses, carnations, chrysanthemums, hydrangeas, and alstroemerias.
These blooms are headed to countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, and even further destinations like South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.
From Ecuador, about 11,766 tons of flowers are expected to take flight, with roses making up nearly 75% of the shipment. Along with gypsophilas, summer flowers, and more carnations, these floral beauties will land in places like Italy, Spain, Poland, Kazakhstan, and Chile.
Leonardo Silva, who oversees operations at Aerosan, shared that the company is deeply committed to helping the floriculture industry thrive. “Our goal is to keep the flowers fresh and beautiful until they reach their final destination,” Silva said. To do this, the flowers are carefully stored in temperature-controlled warehouses and closely tracked during the journey.
This year, Aerosan has invested in new equipment and better processes to move the flowers more quickly and safely. According to Silva, these updates not only help protect the flowers, but also make the work easier and safer for the team handling them.
Mother’s Day is one of the busiest times of the year for flower exports, and countries like Colombia and Ecuador play a big part in bringing vibrant color and joy to gardens and homes around the globe.
