There’s no better time than spring to step outside and enjoy the colors, scents, and fresh air of blooming gardens. Flowers are bursting into life, trees are lush with leaves, and nature is putting on its best show. If you’re planning a trip to Lisbon this May, get ready for a special treat—all at no cost.
Lisbon’s much-loved Jardins Abertos (Open Gardens) festival is back, now in its 14th edition. This event celebrates the beauty of green spaces by opening some of the city’s most stunning gardens to the public, completely free of charge.
Over four weekends—May 3-4, 10-11, 17-18, and 24-25—you can explore these natural wonders while learning more about gardening and plants.
The festival includes guided tours, gardening workshops, nature walks, and hands-on activities for all ages. It’s a great way to connect with nature, whether you’re a beginner gardener or a long-time plant lover.
This year, 23 gardens will take part in the event, though not all will be open every weekend.
Some of the highlights include Estufa Fria, a large greenhouse filled with tropical plants, the peaceful Garden of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and the vast Parque Florestal de Monsanto, Lisbon’s biggest green space.
Several newer gardens are joining in too, like MACAM Garden, Jardins do Bombarda, and the hillside Jardim do Caracol da Penha, each offering something unique and beautiful.
Last year, 28,000 people enjoyed this green getaway, so expect popular spots to get busy. To plan your visit and see which gardens are open when, head over to the Jardins Abertos website.
If you love plants, fresh air, and learning new gardening tips, Lisbon is the place to be this May.
