Plantarium|Groen Direkt Showcases Dutch Tree Nursery Industry’s Innovations and Sustainability Drive

by Anna

The annual Plantarium|Groen Direkt event has once again illuminated the Dutch tree nursery industry, captivating attendees with its array of offerings, novel introductions, and sustainable initiatives. A cornerstone of the industry’s calendar, this two-day fair traditionally draws (large) buyers seeking insights into upcoming seasons’ offerings while providing growers a platform to unveil their innovations. FloralDaily and colleagues at BPnieuws were also in attendance, capturing the essence of the event through a captivating photo report.

Featuring over 200 participating companies, Plantarium|Groen Direkt seamlessly melds actual trade under Groen Direkt’s banner with relationship building and marketing via Plantarium. This dynamic gathering not only showcases outdoor greenery but also extends opportunities to diverse suppliers, particularly in the technological arena. With a common thread of international aspirations, all 223 exhibiting companies cater to a diverse visitor base hailing from not just the Netherlands, but across Europe and beyond. While statistics are yet to be finalized, the anticipation was for around 3,000 visitors.

A major highlight of the event is the presentation of the Green Retail Awards for novelty creations. A panel of experts is tasked with evaluating over 100 entries, culminating in the announcement of winners. Among these, the top spot in the Best Novelty category of the Green Retail Award contest was clinched by Valkplant from HazerswoudeDorp for their entry, the Diervilla splendens ‘G2X88544VAR’ (KODIAK MIXX).

Amidst the bustling aisles and insightful conversations with exhibitors, a prevailing trend emerged: the adoption of peat-free cultivation. Notably, this eco-conscious shift aligns with the broader drive toward sustainability in horticulture. Beyond being a greener choice, peat-free cultivation holds strategic significance, particularly in the context of export to the UK. Aiming to meet future sustainability benchmarks, the professional horticultural sector is mandated to transition to peat-free practices by 2026, followed by an all-encompassing ban by 2030, with certain technical exemptions.

The prevailing sentiment among growers was one of optimism and contentment. Many expressed that the current season is showcasing improvement compared to 2022. Enhanced balance between supply and demand and elevated product quality are notable contributors to this positivity. “Despite the ongoing challenges, including financial constraints for many due to the crisis, flower purchases remain consistent. Consumers may opt for ‘budget-friendly’ or smaller items, but the buying trend persists,” shared an exhibitor. This affirmation resonated across the event, contributing to a buoyant atmosphere that encapsulated the overall contentment of growers.

In summation, Plantarium|Groen Direkt has once again served as a vibrant platform for the Dutch tree nursery industry to converge, exchange ideas, and showcase their commitment to innovation and sustainability. The event’s impact is poised to reverberate through the industry, shaping its trajectory towards a greener, more innovative future.
