The Colombian flower industry is abuzz with activity as Chrysanthemum Week unfolds, shining a spotlight on the significance of Chrysanthemum cultivation in the country. This annual event, which commenced on August 28 and extends until September 1, serves as a pivotal showcase for chrysanthemum breeders, drawing national and international producers and marketers.
The Chrysanthemum industry in Colombia has soared in importance, with exports of this iconic flower crop totaling a staggering 134,122 tons valued at 956 million USD from January to May 2023 alone.
Chrysanthemum Week brings together eight prominent breeders, namely Royal Van Zanten, Dekker, Progeny Breeding, Floritec, Deliflor, Danziger, Icon Selections, and Dümmen Orange. These industry leaders graciously open their doors to enthusiasts and stakeholders, offering a glimpse into their breeding operations within the lush landscapes of Antioquia.
The origins of this collaborative initiative trace back to a shared vision among friends within the sector. In years past, each breeder independently organized their variety showcases. However, in 2015, serendipity played a role when Deliflor and Dümmen Orange independently scheduled their events for the same week. The fortuitous convergence yielded such positive results that they decided to continue hosting their Open Houses concurrently during week 35. Subsequently, other breeders, including Danziger in 2016, Icon and Dekker in 2018, and Royal Van Zanten and Floritec in 2019, have joined this harmonious partnership. This year, Progeny Breeding has come on board, marking an impressive collaboration encompassing nearly all major chrysanthemum breeders in Colombia.
The culmination of these collective efforts gave birth to what we now recognize as ‘Chrysanthemum Week’ in 2019. This event was conceived with the objective of providing American continent growers and international buyers a unique opportunity to witness an array of exceptional chrysanthemum varieties flourishing simultaneously. The event’s track record has been nothing short of remarkable, with each passing year holding greater promise for the future.
