Asocolflores Highlights the Diverse Range of Colombian Grown Flowers
Colombia’s flower industry boasts a rich diversity of 60 species and over 1,400 varieties, reflecting the country’s commitment to sustainable and socially responsible flower production. Asocolflores, the Association of Colombian Flower Exporters, recently launched two promotional videos titled “Flowers of Colombia” to spotlight the industry’s positive environmental and social impacts.
The videos emphasize that Colombian-grown flowers are exported to more than 100 countries, with the United States serving as the largest market for these blooms. Notably, 85% of bouquets sold in the U.S. are sourced from Colombia. On the labor front, Flowers of Colombia provides formal and fair employment opportunities to over 200,000 individuals, with women comprising more than half of the workforce. The industry adheres to a child-free labor policy, ensuring ethical labor practices.
Colombian flower farms employ strict methods that prioritize environmental sustainability. For instance, more than 50% of the water used in these farms is harvested rainwater, saving millions of liters annually. Soil regeneration efforts have reduced pesticide usage by 50%. Moreover, clean energy from the sun is harnessed year-round. Colombia ranks as the world’s second-largest flower exporter and holds the top position for carnations.
