September 6, 2023 – Bull Plant Genetics, led by Hartwig Bull, is making waves in the international market with its late summer flower varieties, namely ‘Sunbeckia,’ ‘SunMagic’ Echinacea, and ‘SunCatcher’ Helianthus. Initially bred for personal use in their German greenhouse, these varieties have gained significant popularity globally, particularly in the United States.
Hartwig Bull shared his insights, saying, “Our varieties for the late summer program have big flowers, are strong, and quite resistant to powdery mildew. These characteristics really boosted the demand, particularly in the US.” Four years ago, the company decided to take its offerings international, initially introducing the varieties in Europe. In 2020, they expanded to the United States, leading to a sharp increase in demand and worldwide requests. Bull Plant Genetics also has plans for more colors and varieties in the near future.
These late summer products, including Sunbeckia, SunMagic, and SunCatcher, cater to the heightened demand for flowering garden products during this time of year. Hartwig Bull explained, “We see it all over the world; it is the time when the consumer comes back from their vacation, and all their plants are dead. They are looking for new flowering products that give that summer feeling in the garden or on their balcony or terrace. When visiting the garden center, the big flowers catch their eyes. On top of that, these varieties attract pollinators, are compact and good branching, ticking all the boxes consumers are looking for nowadays.”
Beyond their visual appeal, these varieties have also gained favor among growers due to their strength. They have performed impressively in trials across Europe, the US, as well as in New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, and Japan. Their ability to withstand heat, rain, and resistance to powdery mildew has made them particularly attractive to growers in the US, where such challenges have been prevalent for several years.
To meet the increasing demand, Bull Plant Genetics has been actively establishing a network of partner labs and propagators worldwide. Additionally, they recently launched a new website to enhance their presence and outreach. The company remains committed to entering new markets and countries to expand its global footprint.
As part of their ongoing breeding efforts, Bull Plant Genetics is not only working on introducing new colors but also unveiling new varieties expected to debut next year, continuing their legacy of innovation and excellence in the industry.
