However, one eucalyptus species stands out due to its instantly recognizable spotted bark patterns – the spotted gum (Corymbia maculata). These iconic trees are commonly planted along urban streets and have adapted well to city environments.
The spotted gum’s unique bark patterns, with spots and mottled patterns, make it easily distinguishable. This species can reach impressive heights, with some old trees growing over 60 meters tall. During flowering seasons, the trees produce abundant blossoms that attract nectar-eating birds like rainbow lorikeets.
Despite being loved by many, there are concerns about the trees shedding bark and branches, which can be considered a nuisance or even a safety hazard. However, spotted gums are considered fire-resistant, and their shedding bark is part of their natural growth process.
Spotted gums are well-suited to urban environments due to their rapid growth, hardiness, and tolerance for poor-quality urban soils. They have straight, light-colored trunks that make them ideal for planting singly, in avenues, or in boulevards. These trees provide shade, privacy, and beauty to city streets.
In addition to their suitability for urban use, spotted gums are known for their resilience to environmental stresses and changing climates. They possess lignotubers and epicormic buds that help them cope with urban challenges. Horticulturalists have developed spotted gum varieties that are even more suited for urban environments, with spreading canopies and reduced risks of dropping branches.
As climate change intensifies, city planners are seeking resilient street trees that can provide cooling shade in hotter climates. Spotted gums are a strong candidate for this role, making them not only iconic but also valuable urban trees.
Despite the challenges of urban life, spotted gums are survivors and have the potential to leave a lasting legacy in city landscapes. Some urban specimens are already 150 years old and continue to thrive.
