Kruiden Claus Embraces Autumn Demand: A Season of Herbs and Growth

by Anna

Kruiden Claus, a renowned nursery known for its herbs, is ushering in what is traditionally a calmer season with renewed vigor. While spring may be their peak period, the nursery has recognized a growing demand for herbs in the autumn months. These herbs find their purpose as ground cover or undergrowth in tree nurseries, breathing life into gardens and landscapes. Business manager Lode Claus sheds light on this evolving trend and how it complements their herb-focused endeavors.

A Blossoming Summer

Coming off a relatively busy summer season, Kruiden Claus is transitioning into what they affectionately refer to as the ‘second season.’ The summer months usually witness a dip in orders from garden centers, a significant part of their customer base. However, this year presented a pleasant surprise. Unpredictable yet favorable weather conditions, characterized by changing humidity levels, created an ideal environment for vegetable gardening. This unexpected boost ensured that sales remained robust throughout the summer, compensating for a slightly delayed start due to a wet spring.

Enter the ‘Second Season’

Now, as autumn approaches, Kruiden Claus prepares for the ‘second season.’ Traditionally, spring from March to June is their busiest period. However, the months of September to November are increasingly proving to be active. Tree nurseries are exhibiting a growing appetite for herbs during this season, particularly for species that serve as ground cover or undergrowth.

According to Lode Claus, these herbs find their way to various destinations, including France and Luxembourg, marking a short yet bustling season that complements their primary spring season.

The Tradition of Autumn Planting

Autumn is traditionally a season for nurseries to engage in planting, with a focus on species such as the March pansy. This aromatic pansy, as its name suggests, blossoms in March. Planting in autumn ensures that the undergrowth is well-established by spring, providing a head start for the season. Garden contractors and wholesalers, recognizing the value of these varieties, demonstrate a heightened demand during autumn.

Wild Garlic: A Spring Herald

As the nursery embraces the autumn season, they remain active by potting various herb types in preparation for spring. One such herb is wild garlic, known for its role as a herald of spring. Wild garlic emerges from mid-February and is among the first herbs in stock. To ensure its availability early in spring, potting it up in autumn is crucial. The season for wild garlic is short, extending until April, but its arrival traditionally symbolizes the onset of spring.

The name “wild garlic” itself hints at its significance. In French, it is called “L’Ail des ours” (Allium ursinum), which translates to bear’s garlic. This name originates from the belief that bears, upon emerging from hibernation in early spring, turn to wild garlic as their first source of food. It is thought to serve as an ideal purge for potential parasites in their intestines, making it an excellent herb for people to welcome spring in good health.

Cultivating Herbs, Crafting Experiences

Kruiden Claus’s commitment to herbs extends beyond the nursery. They recently hosted a unique event called ‘Dinner with the Queen.’ This gourmet dinner, set amidst the fields, celebrated the significance of bees and their vital role in pollination. The event, attended by approximately 800 guests despite inclement weather, featured a chef who prepared meals using herbs. Kruiden Claus provided insights and experiences related to these herbs, creating a memorable and educational event.

A Book to Chronicle Herb Journeys

Inspired by their successful ‘Dinner with the Queen’ event and the positive response to their book ‘Kruiden, kweken, koken’ (Herbs, grow, cook), Lode Claus and his father, Christian, are planning a sequel. The upcoming book will follow the same concept, focusing on growing herbs and crafting recipes around them. This book, slated for release next September, will allow them to spotlight herbs throughout all seasons, including spring and autumn. It’s a delightful journey that places herbs at the center of culinary and horticultural experiences.

Kruiden Claus continues to thrive as they explore new seasons and opportunities, showcasing the enduring charm and significance of herbs.
