Kunming, China – From September 15 to 17, the 21st Kunming International Flower Expo unfolded at the prestigious Dianchi International Convention and Exhibition Center, becoming a vibrant showcase of floral splendor. The event garnered participation from 39 flower and gardening companies hailing from 12 diverse countries, including the Netherlands, India, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Australia, France, and Japan. In addition to this international presence, an impressive 409 domestic companies also joined the exhibition, cementing its status as a prominent floral gathering.
The province of Yunnan, often referred to as an essential hub of floriculture, took center stage at the expo. In 2022, Yunnan Province boasted an expansive flower planting area of approximately 150,000 hectares. The production scale remained impressively stable, contributing to an overall industry chain output value that exceeded a staggering 110 billion yuan. Within this flourishing landscape, the cultivation of fresh-cut flowers stood out, encompassing over 20,000 hectares of land and yielding a remarkable 17.717 billion branches. This segment alone accounted for an impressive 15.776 billion yuan in output value, representing more than 50% of the nation’s total fresh-cut flower production. The exceptional production and sales of fresh-cut flowers have maintained Yunnan’s top-ranking status in China for an impressive 29 consecutive years.
Furthermore, Yunnan showcased its commitment to sustainable flower cultivation with an expansive area dedicated to soilless cultivation and water and fertilizer circulation, surpassing 1,726 hectares. The Dounan Flower Market, a renowned trading and distribution hub, reaffirmed its position as the largest in Asia. With a transaction volume of 11 billion fresh-cut flowers and an associated transaction value of 12.1 billion yuan, the market underscored its enduring significance.
Amidst the floral extravaganza, the expo hosted pivotal international conferences addressing contemporary issues within the floral industry. Notable events included discussions on the modernization and development of facilities and equipment in the flower industry, as well as the protection of new plant varieties in China, with a particular focus on flowers. These conferences provided a platform for sharing insights into variety protection, examining current scenarios, and forecasting future policy trends for safeguarding novel plant varieties.
The session on the modernization and development of facilities and equipment featured the Netherlands, which offered valuable perspectives on enhancing high-tech greenhouse operations and implementing innovative tools for efficient energy management. Attendees were exposed to the latest accomplishments, technologies, and concepts that are driving advancements in flower production. Modern facility agriculture strategies, such as water and fertilizer integration, the adoption of small and medium-sized efficient machinery and equipment, and the utilization of sprinkler and drip irrigation, were promoted as key avenues to elevate the quality of high-end facilities and equipment within Yunnan’s flourishing floral industry.
The 21st Kunming International Flower Expo demonstrated that flowers transcend borders, uniting nations and industry experts to celebrate the beauty of nature while driving sustainable and innovative practices in floriculture.
