The Netherlands – Ridder, a family-owned company specializing in technology for protected horticulture, proudly commemorates its 70th anniversary, marking seven decades of groundbreaking innovation, sustained growth, and unwavering commitment to both customers and employees. CEO Pascal Piepers reflects on the unique essence of Ridder, encapsulated by what he calls the “Ridder feeling,” characterized by dedication, entrepreneurial spirit, and collaborative synergy that extends not only within the company but also throughout the entire horticultural industry. Furthermore, Ridder remains at the forefront of development and continues to make valuable contributions to society.
In an era where the global population is projected to reach 10 billion by 2050, efficient and sustainable food production is paramount. Protected horticulture emerges as a key solution to this challenge, and Ridder has been instrumental in developing cutting-edge solutions over the past seven decades.
Ridder’s journey commenced in 1953 when founder Frans Nugteren ingeniously connected a trench digger to a tractor, revolutionizing the efficiency of ditch digging. This momentous event marked the birth of Ridder, originally headquartered in Ridderkerk, The Netherlands, from which it derived its name. From its inception, the company has been deeply committed to innovation and collaboration, fostering a legacy of innovation in smart greenhouse technology that spans the globe.
In 1967, Ridder ventured into the production of reduction motors, later evolving into drive systems. Simultaneously, the company developed an internal post-calculation system, which has since become an industry-standard ERP system, widely employed in the steel and manufacturing sectors.
In 2011, Ridder expanded its portfolio with the acquisition of HortiMaX from Pijnacker, enabling the provision of a broader spectrum of solutions to its customers. This strategic move encompassed labor registration, water treatment, and climate control. The expansion of Ridder’s services paved the way for international growth, leading to the establishment of branches in Canada, France, the United States, and other regions.
The year 2015 marked a significant turning point with the launch of Climate Screens, an enterprise dedicated to climate screens. This strategic pivot was aimed at better catering to customer needs and delivering a comprehensive offering to the horticultural sector. The innovative approach resonated with dealers, greenhouse builders, investors, and growers alike.
In 2021, Ridder unveiled one of its most remarkable achievements, the GRoW tomato harvesting robot, addressing the burgeoning labor shortage in the horticultural industry.
Yet, as CEO Pascal Piepers emphasizes, what truly sets Ridder apart is not solely its innovation and customer-centric approach, but, above all, the remarkable individuals who comprise the organization. The “Ridder feeling” embodies qualities of dedication, entrepreneurship, and collaboration, fostering an environment where these traits flourish both within the company and across the entire industry.
Piepers remarks, “The entire Ridder team takes immense pride in celebrating 70 years of innovation, growth, and dedication. As a token of Ridder’s appreciation to its organization and family for 70 years of commitment, we have crafted a timeline wall, chronicling our milestones, which will grace every Ridder location. This visual testament to our journey will remind us of how far we’ve come and the strides we’ve taken. Furthermore, we eagerly anticipate a promising future, brimming with new milestones yet to be inscribed on our timeline.”
